Helen Handley Pernell

(Mrs. W. Earl Pernell, D.D.S.)

Mrs. Pernell was the daughter of Otho N. Handley and Lily M. Handley who were pioneer farmers and early real estate brokers in Chandler.  Mrs. Pernell was the first president of the Junior Service Guild, serving from January through September 1933.  She also served as president for the 1956-57 Club year and was made an honorary Life Member in 1959.  Her husband, W. Earl Pernell, DDS, was the first dentist in Chandler.  He was active in the American Academy of Implant Dentures, the Arizona State Dental Association and was a Rotarian.  The Pernells lived on the Handley ranch following the death of Mrs. Pernell’s parents.  They designed a formal sunken garden as a memorial.  The garden became one of the beauty spots of the community and was one of Dr. Pernell’s chief hobbies.  Their daughter, Patricia Pernell Fisher, was born in 1933 and grew up in the Junior Service Guild and Chandler Service Club.  She lives in Tucson and is a Sustaining Member of Chandler Service Club.
