Lily M. Handley

(Mrs. Otho N. Handley)

Otho N. Handley and Lily M. Handley were pioneer ranchers on a 20-acre farm north and east of Chandler known as Monte Vista Rancho.  They also were early real estate brokers in Chandler.  Although Mrs. Handley was never a member of the Junior Service Guild, she was a major inspiration and driving force behind the endeavor.  She recognized the fact that many local families could not afford to send lunch to school with their children, and she was very familiar with the annual charity ball hosted by the St. Luke’s Board of Friendly Visitors.  With Mrs. Handley’s encouragement and support, on January 15, 1933, her daughter, Helen Handley Pernell, and her friends organized the Junior Service Guild and began providing meals to Chandler school children.  Funding for the program came from the Junior Service Guild Charity Ball, the first of which was held in the spring of 1933.  Mrs. Handley is forever considered Club Mother and Sponsor.
